Chess Tactics for Beginners: 5 Patterns to Learn First

Beginner games are often decided by one move that wins a queen, a rook, or the game on the spot. Those moments aren't random. They follow a small set of repeating shapes, and five are especially useful to learn first: the fork, the pin, the skewer, the discovered attack, and the back-rank mate.
The good news is that you don't calculate these patterns so much as recognize them. Once you've seen a knight fork fifty times, you start noticing the shape before it happens, on both sides of the board. That's the whole project of this article: learn the five shapes well enough that they jump out at you.
The fork: one move, two targets
A fork is a single move that attacks two things at once. Your opponent can only save one, so you take the other.
Knights are the classic forking piece, because their L-shaped attack is the easiest to overlook. The textbook example: a white knight jumps from b5 to c7. On c7 it checks the king on e8 and attacks the rook on a8 at the same time. Black must deal with the check, and the knight eats the rook next move. Another one every beginner meets eventually is the "family fork": a knight lands on f7 and hits both the queen on d8 and the rook on h8.
Pawns fork too, and it costs just as much. If Black has a knight on c6 and a bishop on e6, a white pawn pushing from d4 to d5 attacks both at once. One of them is lost.
Forks feed on loose pieces. A fork only wins material when a target can't be saved, so the practical defense is a habit: before you move, glance around the board and notice which of your pieces nobody is defending. Two undefended pieces standing near each other are an invitation. When the shape makes sense, practice fork puzzles until you can spot both targets quickly.
The pin: frozen in place
A pin attacks a piece that can't move, or shouldn't, because something more valuable stands directly behind it on the same line. When the piece behind is the king, moving the pinned piece is literally illegal; that's an absolute pin. When it's the queen or a rook behind, moving is legal but expensive; that's a relative pin.

The king is behind the knight, so every knight move would leave the king in check. The rules simply do not allow it.

The queen is behind the knight instead. Moving is perfectly legal, but Bxe8 then takes the queen, so the knight stays put by choice.
You can meet pins early in a game. White's bishop on b5 lining up on the knight on c6 is the Ruy Lopez, and the moment Black's d-pawn steps to d6 that knight is pinned against the king on e8. Black's bishop coming to g4 to pin the knight on f3 against the queen on d1 is another familiar setup.
Two things make pins dangerous. First, a pinned piece is a fake defender. If your knight on f3 is pinned against your queen, anything that knight was guarding is effectively unguarded, because the moment it captures, your queen falls. Beginners lose a lot of material to defenders that couldn't actually defend. Second, a pinned piece can't run, so your opponent can pile attackers onto it: after ...Bg4 pins the f3 knight, a black knight arriving on d4 attacks it again, and suddenly you're scrambling.
Breaking a pin is usually simple if you do it early: put the question to the bishop with a pawn (h3 against a bishop on g4, a6 against one on b5), block the line with another piece, or step the valuable piece off the line entirely. Pin puzzles train you to check whether the pinned piece is legally or practically able to move.
The skewer: a pin in reverse
The skewer uses the same geometry as the pin with the values flipped: the more valuable piece stands in front, so it has to move, exposing the piece behind it.
A clean example: Black's king stands on e7 with a rook on f8 behind it on the same diagonal. White plays Ba3+, the king has to step aside, and the bishop takes the rook on f8. Rook endgames produce the same idea on files: if Black's king is on d5 with his rook on d8 behind it, Rd1+ forces the king off the d-file and the white rook runs up the board to capture on d8.
Skewers punish careless lineups, and the lineup that matters most is your king and queen sharing a file or diagonal. Whenever you notice they're on the same line, even with pieces in between for now, fix it before your opponent notices too. Skewer puzzles make that line geometry easier to recognize.
The discovered attack: the piece that moves isn't the one that bites
For a discovered attack you need two of your pieces on the same line: a rook, bishop, or queen aiming at an enemy target, with one of your own pieces standing in the way. When the blocker moves, the attack behind it switches on, and the blocker is free to create a second threat of its own on the very same move. Two threats from one move is usually one threat too many to answer.
The nastiest version is the discovered check. Say White has a rook on e1, a knight on e5, and a bishop on c4, and Black's king still sits on e8. White plays Nxf7: the rook now checks the king along the e-file, while the knight, which just grabbed a pawn and is covered by the bishop, attacks the queen on d8 and the rook on h8. Black is forced to answer the check first, and the knight collects the queen or the rook a move later.
The defensive habit is to notice enemy long-range pieces that share a line with your king or queen, even when something currently blocks the line. Blockers move. This is also one of the honest arguments for castling early: it takes your king off the e-file before the center opens. Use discovered-attack puzzles to practice looking through the blocking piece.
The back-rank mate: the wall that traps its own king
After castling short, your king sits on g8 behind pawns on f7, g7, and h7. Those pawns are a shield against diagonal attacks, and they're also a wall at your king's back. If nothing defends your first rank, an enemy rook or queen landing on e8 or d8 is checkmate. The king has no square to step to.

The rook on a1 covers every square from b1 to f1. Rxa7 wins a pawn and walks away from all of them.

Nothing covers e1 now. Re1 is mate: the king has no square and White cannot block on f1.
This pattern can decide a game even after you learn the definition. Two habits prevent many back-rank mates. Make luft (push h6 as Black or h3 as White) once enemy heavy pieces start staring at your back rank, so the king has an escape hatch. And count your back-rank defenders before trading rooks: the rook you're about to swap off may be the only piece keeping mate off your first rank. Making the patterns automatic
Pattern recognition grows through repeated exposure. Start with one theme at a time, then switch to mixed sets once the shape feels familiar, because in a real game nobody tells you which pattern is on the board. You can do both in Cody's chess puzzle trainer.
In your own games, run a quick scan before committing to a move: checks, captures, and threats, yours and your opponent's.
